Info regarding HE versions for Windows 98 - ME, NT4, XP & above

Just wondering if HE is getting tested on Windows 7?

No.
Was only tested on 98, 2000, XP 32/62 bit, 2003 server and Vista.

Tested on Windows 7 RC1.
I have not noticed any sugnificant problem as was reported for previous versions... (would check more)

P.S Found bug when undocking toolbar, but then noticed that it happenes also on XP. Would be fixed next beta.

I've been using it on Windows 7 w/o any major issue. I did report one bug, but I don't think it was Windows 7 related.

If you are referring to the bug mentioning the folder/file synchronization requiring two clicks (http://forum.hippoedit.com/index.php/topic,491.0.html) then I tried to reproduce this and did not experience it.

As far as I know, there are some bugs with 64 bit version running on Windows 7 64 bit (reported by samuel, not yet checked) and known bugs when used UAC and not administrator account (I think the same problems would be relevant to Vista). But I would try to fix this soon. At least problem with 64 bit version. Problem with UAC probably would require changing of default location for settings files and I do not want to do this is 1.4x.

H Alex, I would like to know the major differences on the Wndows 98 - ME versions and the NT4 versions of HE.

Specifically, I know on Windows XP and above of HE is Unicode supported. What about to those below XP.

Sorry for asking such ridicule question, but i could actually installand run the Windows 98 version of HE under Windows 7 X64.

Hi Samuel,

Major difference between 98/Me and NT/XP/Win7 version is Unicode support. This mean 98/Me could not correctly handle multi language documents or Unicode code pages. From another side, non-unicode version uses twice less memory, because all texts are stored as single byte.

In addition to this, 98/Me version does not use some new functionality available from Windows 2000 and later as Alpha icons, Layered windows etc.

But generally you can run 98/Me version on any machine. In addition, I can say that non-unicode version is much less tested. Regular checks that I do, that it is runs on 98 and can open/edit files.

I see, but how about NT4? (Being NT4 i am wondering is it the 98/ME or ??)

NT4 already has Unicode support, so you can use Unicode version (XP). But saying the truth I have not tested on NT4. From my knowledge should work.

I see, just to let u know, when I tested on compatibility mode (Selecting Windows 2k and Windows NT4 SP5, as that was the only NT4 option), both crashes.

which version you have tried ? 32 bit Unicode? On which system?
I have tried compatibility mode on 32 bit XP and got any problem (saying the truth even with 95 for Unicode version).
I have also retested on real Windows 2000 system both non-Unicode and Unicode version works (for Unicode version you need to install Debugging tools for Windows first or install it on top of non-Unicode installation which has dbghlp.dll inside)

So I would assume that Compatibility mode is not the same as real system.
