Centred Text Windows for Wide-Screen Monitors
« on: February 20, 2011, 04:42:02 am »
I recently purchased a 24" 16:9 Wide-Screen LED/LCD Monitor, prior to that, for the last decade or more, I have been staring at 4:3 laptop screens.

One thing that I have noticed, is that whereas before, with the laptop screen, I could see all of it, without exercising serious peripheral vision.

However with the new whopper of a monitor, it's a case of "pan and scan" left-to-right, as even peripheral vision does not cut it.

Another consequence, is that supposing word wrap is on, then in a text window, all the "action" is now on the far left of the screen.

This issue is not unique to HE of course, I suffer the same with many apps. The general solution for me is to move the entire screen to the right, sufficiently, so that the far left of the screen is much closer to me, so that I do not have to look left or turn left.

In hindsight I should have got a 4:3 24" monitor, mea culpa.  ;D

In any case, as HE is my favourite editor for composing text, (I don't use it for programming) I thought that a useful feature would be a "VIEW" toggle-able option to centre the text on a window.

For instance suppose that you have defined wrap margins at 72 for  a text window. Then column 36 would be in the centre of the screen and the column ruler shifted across according.

Thank you.

Hi,

thank for the feedback.

I can give you easy solution ;) Just do not maximize editor screen but keep it 4:3 proportion and center on screen ;)

I have understood requested feature, and will write this on my to do, but it see it very limited, because it will work only if you use page wrap. This can lead to confusion of users, in other modes.
Maybe to have some more modes as booklet layout in addition would help.

And also, in some weeks you will feel yourself already comfortable with 16:9 screens, but feature will be still inside :)

Best regards,
Alex.

Hi Alex,

Yes that is a solution :-)

I have also reset word wrap to screen width and working that way for the time being.

But sometimes you do need specific margin settings to work within, so being able to "centre" the window would still be useful.

Though perhaps not a critical feature.

Best regards.

PS, Off-topic, but OpenID for logins doesn't seem to work: "The requested identifier did not return the proper information" - FYI.

Ok, as I said, placed the request my list ;)
With OpenID: I will check. Maybe something is not right in configuration on forum side. But if something wrong from coding perspective, we need to wait until update of the SMF forum - this not my code, I am just using a solution of good SMF guys (see link on the bottom of the page). This version of forum was a release candidate, hope with release this will be fixed. Nevertheless, I will check - thanks.
