•As tool item, and file name as argument
- is not too elegant, and for me this means I need to set it for each type of file (?) e.g. .vb, .cs, .cmd, .sql, and so on?

No, Arthur.

In tools dialog box

just select "Default Source" or even "Default"  before clicking on "[Add...]"
instead off having an specific syntax   (as e.g. .vb, .cs, .cmd, .sql, and so on) selected.

Then you would see and could use this tool for all syntax's

.
