File > Save COPY as...

Missed feature: "File > Save COPY as..."

If i want to modify an document ("file name.txt" f.ex.) but keep the original source.

To achieve that:

* i do an file copy in explorer first ("file name.txt" ==> "file name_bak.txt"),

OR
* i do an "Save as.." to save as "file name_bak.txt"  ...-...  and then load the original "file name.txt" again.


Now I want to mention that i like the feature of NotePad2 "File > Save Copy..."
to just create an copy of the current open file to an new name ("file name_bak.txt")
and let me working on with my file ("file name.txt").

Maybe this is an improvement idea for HippoEDIT too?

Thinking some more...

i can already do
1) "File >Save as..."   xxx_bak.ext
2) "File > Open" and pick the last xxx.ext file

So i got an more nifty idea: "versioning"
* "File > Save Copy as version"

to auto save my current file as xxx_001.ext.  (If this file already exist Then increase the number)
and leave my xxx.ext file open.

So my xxx.ext file is always the recent (youngest) file
and i get an collection of xxx_$$$.ext files as backup in an sorted manner.

This would also an great option for
"Options... > [ +] Editor > File Backup" ==> "[ ] keep Versions"
and/or
"Options... > [ +] General > AutoSave" ==> Every 30 minutes AND  ==> "[ ] keep Versions"

BTW, Backup:

PSPad has the optional option to
put the "bak" string at the end of the file name
instead to add them after the extension

Example:
HippoEDIT.ext.bak
PSPad.bak.ext

* This has the advantage that you can still open the backup file
   (with the right syntax scheme loaded and like this)
* and also make it more easy to include it into file-system-backups like *.ext

Hi Stefan,

about Save COPY as - accepted. I think this is good/missing feature and would be added . I have seen such options in other editors before, but have no idea why it is needed

About simple versioning.  The idea is good I have it in my todo. And even maybe it was already discussed on forum. But it should be designed carefully and integrated smoothly And I do not want such quick + dirty solutions .

New in 1.47.732 - "File > Save as Copy..." added.

Now you can open an file and save it as Copy under an new name, while you still edit an file with the last name.

For example:
- open an file 'work.txt'
- use 'Save as Copy' to make an backup of that file as f.ex. 'work -last bak.txt'
- you still have the file 'work.txt' loaded to immediately start doing your work!
You save two extra steps as you had have to do before this feature was implemented. (i.e.: closing the copy file and reopen the work.txt file)

BTW, the "Recent Folders" box in the 'Save as'- dialog is very nifty, too.

BTW: on Open Dialog (not done for Save dialog) there is also very nifty icon added to the toolbar near "View" and "Create New Folder" as "Add to Favorites" doing the same as one in File Explorer.
So now you can access you favorites folders also here.

Wish:
the "Recent Folders" box in the 'Save as'- dialog should provide the current folder of the current file TOO.
Right now i see only recent folders but not the folder from where i have open the current file i want to 'save as'.

EDIT: no! wait.
Sorry, it works as expected, i see the current path in 'Save as'!

The thing is:
if i open an file from command line (from file manager) in HippoEDIT, then HE's 'Save as'-dialog didn't know the path.
O.K., now i think this is more complicated to implement

Hi Stefan,

from your last posts I think it is better to you to have Tools->Options->General->File Open Dialog Initial directory as Current File directory but not Last used. Or this does not help you or does not work for Save As ?

From another side, be sure that workspace you used has Last Used history enabled.

Current folder is not added to Recent by default. I think you get it there by chance or it was initial directory.

I would think about adding current folder somewhere, but probably in toolbar menu was explained before and I need to place it also in Save As dialog.

This is a bug. I think. Can reproduce it also. File Save dialog should use same settings as File open dialog. From my understanding (generally do not know if this correct, or better to use current file dir always...).

You are right. Would change the description and fix a bug. And later we can discuss what is better to show as initial directory in case of Save As dialog...

BTW: I have added all useful folders to Favorite menu in toolbar of Save As (beta already on server, but has some problems with installer, so I have not announce it,  would fix today evening hopefully)  and also new template tag %?% you can used.

What do u mean with "useful folders" ? ...... I have there only "Add" and "Manage" (737), or i didn't understand.

No, I have not explained

You can get there as you favorites folders as automatic folders like:
- Current file directory
- Last directory
- Working directory (From Document settings in tools or Project settings)
- System Current directory (but probably it is always equal to currently selected, because windows changes current directory when navigation in file dialog)

From this 4 duplicates are removed and also folders equal to currently shown in file dialog removed.
So, probably this was your case.
Try to change directory and then check again.

Automatically?   In the star favorites? I have there nothing more as the two default entries as shown in my pic above.

Ahhh, wait, NOW !
 - i open the "Save as" dialog - and select an other folder from "recent folders"
- or browse for an other folder -
- then i have the folder of the current open file  in the favorites menu.
Nothing more.
And only for the moment, next time it is removed. (just to mention it... i guess this is wanted that way)
So i see one of your four: "- Current file directory" only there.


AND
Do you mean with "- Last directory" ==> "- Last directories"? - the dirs i was in while browsing for the right one? -
Otherwise i understand "- Last directory" may be the same as "- Current file directory"?


I don't see how this is meant and should work .... i will test some more to get it.

Just to make this clear: I never use the installer, i just unpack and use.

Just wait for a new beta. I have done some more fix.

Last directory, is the directory were used, you last time opened Open/Save dialog.
For list of recent folders, you still need drop down at the bottom (but maybe it is a good idea to move everything to toolbar... but it would be not so easy to find it)
There is no sense to show you duplicates or folder equal to currently open folder. The why is some states you can see nothing (for example, when your initial dir is current file dir, and you just open the dialog).
But if you would select last directory or this directory in setting as initial for file open/save dialogs, you would see something in the menu immediately after open of dialog.

And the entries are dynamic and depend from current state of the dialog.

Hello

in my first editor  if you have selected a bloc
the option File>Write selection.... and option File>Append selection... is turned ON
and you can "Write" /create/ a new file with the active extension, in the active directory ;
just write the new name with  the keyboard for this new file.

Save COPY as... is for all the text,
 I think a "COPY selection as..." is more interesting

Your advise ?

Hi Alain,

thanks for suggestion!

Something similar already exist. It requires once keystroke more, but can cover functionality for creating file from selection. Edit->Paste New. If you copy selection, with this command you get a new file with same syntax + encoding. Only, what I see that extension is not copied. But here it is correct, because it is from clipboard, and generally do not connected to some document.

And what does Append ?
