Feature requests and suggestions / Simultaneous Text Editing
« on: February 10, 2013, 04:04:44 am »
I just read and think why not if not already HE would support simultaneous text editing?
In Sublime Text it is even featured as almost the key feature. Notepad++ has it now. E-TEXT EDITOR has it too.

Bug reports / Clicking on NUM button in the toolbar generates a message
« on: January 02, 2013, 01:11:30 am »
In HE (both new and the old versions) if I try to change the num lock in the editor status bar I get message "The key combination (Pause) is not a command" and it does not change (bug?), how do I make it changed in HE (working)?

Bug reports / Toolbar Icon Images Nuked Out
« on: October 24, 2012, 03:49:24 am »
Hello all,

I didn't submit bugs for a long time.

So this one is odd: I upgraded HE to the latest and greatest 1.50.782, alas somehow I ended up with my toolbar icons nuked out.

General Discussion / How to add new syntax support?
« on: September 30, 2012, 11:04:14 pm »
I am on 1.50.778.

Wanted to add ASP syntax support, so downloaded the ASP archive from

Then exacted its contents to the location specified on the page above and then opening a .aspx does not turn on the highlighting.

I guess I need to turn it on manually, but it would be nice to have turned upon getting the new template.

Bug reports / A UNIX File Shown as Mixed Mode
« on: April 20, 2012, 08:37:45 pm »
I suggested a feature, but it may be very well a defect instead.
Thing is, I can see the line ending is being indicated (not the file type) in the HE's status bar (bottom), but after I opened a UNIX file it does not say UNIX, it says MIXED, however, there is no CRs and CRLFs or LFs and CRLFs in the file (note, Notepad displays it as UNIX).

Presently, if one opens say a UNIX file type (Line Feed chars for record delimiter only), HippoEdit happily opens the file displaying it correctly (or as if it would be a Windows, CRLF chars containing file), but the fact a non-Windows type of a file is loaded remains transparent to the end user, therefore I am proposing adding such a message or an indicator to the status bar.

PS: Out of many text editors looks like only Notepad++ does that.

Feature requests and suggestions / Requesting Ability to Transpose Lines
« on: August 24, 2011, 11:17:57 pm »
I guess this topic will stay within the feature suggestions  :), OK, now to the point:
I have been recently tasked with migrating a large number of text files returned from a proprietary database to SQL Server.
Oftentimes the files contain table headers e.g. ABC1 ABC2 XYZ1 XYZ2 and so forth; I would like to transpose (an Excelish expression meaning line to columns) these lines into columns so the above would become
(then I hope to the macro in the HE alpha would add the commas), the # of fields is a catastrophe, thus I think it would be nice to have HE being able convert lines to columns. Right now I can do that in Excel, but have formatting issues, besides, I not aware of  any other text editor or IDE that would be able to do this.

Bug reports / Search Dialog Moves Beyond Visible Area
« on: August 24, 2011, 05:39:50 pm »
After some deliberation on my side I have decided to post this into the feature request/suggestion section because it does not constitute a bug for me, more on what is this in a moment.
So we all know that the search dialog moves as you click "Find Next" if it happens to overlap the text it is looking for, a very cool feature, thank you, but at times it moves itself beyond the visible portion of the screen (because the searched text is at the bottom of the editor), now here is the thing: the search button becomes sunken below the "waist line", hence to reach out to it I need to pull the search dialog up using its title bar, then finally click the "find next" button, or "find all" or whatever, not a big deal, but looking for text all last night this made me very tired pulling the search dialog up every other second or so.
I guess it will not take too much time to improve the search dialog positioning by taking into consideration the visible portion of the screen when moved.

General Discussion / Pay attention to HippoEdit.pdb file size
« on: January 11, 2011, 04:41:45 pm »
Just dropping in to say that I discovered the file size of HippoEdit.pdb went over 100MB. I think it is an excessive size, perhaps the file needs to be re-cycled on a size basis.   Also, it seems that HippoEdit starts faster once this file is removed.
PS: I am on ver. 1.50.709

Feature requests and suggestions / Right-click menu revision request
« on: October 14, 2010, 07:36:57 pm »
It is rather a suggestion to revise the context menu (that pops up on right-click).
1) Remove one of the 'more -> ' menu items. This makes me confused which one I need to click (silly me  ;))
2) Smart Navigate, select all, appear twice (once in the top menu and another in navigation), pl leave out one, perhaps the one at the top.
3) Collapse to definition makes HE crash. Not sure if this is because I am on the 1.50 ver.

1) For me it is more convenient to have Save As Dialog in the File menu;

2) When I do Save As from the right-click context menu of the file tab the file gets saved to a new directory of my choice, but the file label path is not reflecting the new path (picture provided). For me it is a small bug because it causes me to panic.

I just needed to peek what the end of line characters are in a text file, but I could only see a wierd looking character, I wish HippoEdit could really show if my file ends with CR LF and/or LF only similarly to what I used to see in Notepad++ (which is bummer - failed to load a 300 Mb file and even did not tell me it did not load it completely - kudos to HE  :))

Bug reports / Cannot match brace in a long line of text
« on: April 28, 2010, 03:45:46 pm »
I was working on a long line of text in VB. I needed to match a brace. However, HE does not highlight matching braces in long lines (like in the image) and if I do right-click -> Navigate -> Go To Matching Brace nothing happens. I understand I can simply start refactoring the code, but that takes too much time, and Format command does nothing either, which would be a nice thing though to have indeed.
I really would like this functionality be always working for me.

FAQ / Boxed Text Selection with Multiline Editing
« on: April 27, 2010, 03:11:18 am »
I have just came across two features implemented in VS 2010 - boxed text selection with multiline editing, but actually it was already implemented in HippoEdit ,if I am not mistaken in the previous version.
Here is the link to a very nice presentation, just be aware HippoEdit can do the same:
The idea is simply in the ability to Alt-Select multiple lines of text and then write / edit across all of them at once.

I wish I would be able to rename a string in the whole doc by just right-clicking it.

So for example, I highlight a variable in my file and right-click to globally rename it.

Right now I need to click Ctrl-H to do so, but need to carefully examine the settings there first that may be set to a dangerous scope of say All Open Documents, so it is a waste of time for me.

I feel overall, I need better refactoring capabilities.
