Feature requests and suggestions / Vertical line density
« on: January 06, 2015, 12:12:55 pm »
Hi Alex,

EditPad Pro and EmEditor display a few more lines in the editor pane than HippoEdit, even if the font, the font size, and the editor pane size are exactly the same. HippoEdit seems to add one or two pixels of empty space between the lines. Would it be possible to turn off that behaviour?

Andreas

Bug reports / Undesired lock on folder
« on: December 15, 2014, 12:20:18 pm »
Hi Alex,

in the following scenario, HippoEdit keeps an undesired lock on a folder:

1. Disable the option 'Keep files locked while editing them' in HippoEdit.
2. Create a directory.
3. Copy a text file into the directory.
4. Open the text file in HippoEdit.
5. Close the text file in HippoEdit, but keep HippoEdit running.
6. Delete the file.

After these five steps, the directory cannot be deleted although it is empty. Windows Explorer says: "The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program. Close the folder or file and try again." The folder can only be deleted after closing HippoEdit.

Best regards,
Andreas

Feature requests and suggestions / Sort order in window management dialog
« on: December 07, 2014, 12:30:32 pm »
I have the following wishes:

1. In the window management dialog (Window -> Windows), I would like to be able to sort the entries in tab order, i.e. the leftmost tab should be the topmost entry in the list.

2. The window management dialog should remember the sorting criterion chosen by the user. (Currently, when you open the window management dialog, the entries will always be sorted alphabetically by name.)

Hi Alex,

this is quite a special request, i.e. there are might not be many other users interested in it. Anyway, if it's not too much work, I would be grateful if you could implement it.

I'm often using HippoEdit on a remote Windows PC via Remote Desktop Connection. I would like to have a blinking cursor in that environment. Currently it's not blinking. The reason seems to be that blinking is disabled by Microsoft's Remote Desktop implementation in order to save bandwidth. However, I don't care about that small bandwidth gain, I want a blinking cursor for better usability.

I found another editor which supports this: EditPad Pro. Under this link you can find more information. The reason why EditPad Pro's cursor is blinking during remote connections seems to be that it doesn't use the standard Windows cursor but a different implementation with some advanced features.

Andreas

Feature requests and suggestions / Improvement to color management needed
« on: October 25, 2014, 09:58:13 am »
Hi Alex,

suppose the user wants to have a yellow background of the current line and a blue background of selected text. This is a simple and reasonable wish, isn't it? But it seems to be impossible to get this in HippoEdit. Here is what I tried:

1. Attempt:
    Current line: Yellow, Alpha=0%
    Selected back: Blue, Alpha=0%
Result: Selected back in current line is yellow ==> fail

2. Attempt:
    Current line: Yellow, Alpha=100%
    Selected back: Blue, Alpha=0%
Result: Background of current line is white ==> fail

3. Attempt:
    Current line: Yellow, Alpha=0%
    Selected back: Blue, Alpha=100%
Result: Selected back in current line is yellow ==> fail

4. Attempt:
    Current line: Yellow, Alpha=50%
    Selected back: Blue, Alpha=50%
Result: Selected back in current line is light grey ==> fail

5. Attempt:
    Current line: Yellow, Alpha=50%
    Selected back: Blue, Alpha=0%
Result: Selected back in current line is dark grey ==> fail

Things get even worse when the user also wants to freely configure the background color of smart highlighted text (incremental search result 2).

By the way, I think that this shortcoming in the color management of HippoEdit is also the reason for the poor quality of many pre-defined color schemes, e.g. Eclipse.

In my opinion, HippoEdit needs to maintain some sort of "priorities" for colors. For example, the configured color of Selected back must have a higher priority than the configured color of the Current line. And the configured color of smart highlighted text needs to have even a higher priority.

Best regards,
Andreas

PS: While I made the above tests, HippoEdit crahed several times (after I pressed the Apply button in the Color Schemes dialog box).

Bug reports / Closing parenthesis ")" not added
« on: October 20, 2014, 03:51:09 pm »
Hi Alex,

copy the following line of code into a C++ source file in HippoEdit:

    int a = 1 + ((2 +3);

Now place the cursor onto the closing parenthesis ")".

Then press ")" on the keyboard.

As a result, the closing parenthesis ")" will NOT be added to the code.

General Discussion / Question about Find Results window
« on: October 14, 2014, 09:52:55 am »
Hi Alex,

currently, matches in the Find Results window are underlined. I would like to change this so that they are not underlined but have a yellow background color. Is this possible? If so, where can I change this?

Best regards,
Andreas

Hippoedit becomes extremely slow when searching for a regular expression of the form  <frequent string> <any string> <seldom string>. Here is an example of such a regular expression:

a.*bkstfwxlhsdgdhlsgfdgsf

EmEditor and EditPad Pro do not have any problems with this kind of regular expressions.

Maybe this is not exactly a bug, but at least it's a bad implementation, which effectively makes HippoEdit unusable for me in the case where I need to search for such a regular expression.

Bug reports / Behavior of View.SearchOutput
« on: October 04, 2014, 11:09:11 pm »
The command description of View.SearchOutput says: "Show/Hide Find Results pane. Menu path: View > Panes > Find Results".

Showing the Find Results pane does work fine. However, hiding the Find Results pane does not work.

When the Find Results pane is visible, I would like to hide it by means of the command View.SearchOutput. In other words: The command should toggle the visible/hidden state of the Find Results pane.

Bug reports / Wrong/unexpected behavior of 'Copy Full Path'
« on: September 25, 2014, 10:28:07 am »
Hi Alex,

if you have two open files, file1 and file2, and file1 is the active one, then right-clicking the tab of file2 and choosing 'Copy Full Path' will copy the path of file1 to the clipboard. The expected behavior would be that the path of file2 is copied to the clipboard.

Bug reports / Code folding even though outlining margin is disabled
« on: September 16, 2014, 01:49:43 pm »
In the syntax settings, I have disabled the outlining margin, because I don't want to have code folding at all. Nevertheless, when I put the mouse pointer somewhere near the left edge of the editor window and click the left mouse button, HippoEDIT will fold the code in/out. HippoEDIT shouldn't do that.

Bug reports / RandomColorDocTabs setting has no effect?
« on: September 11, 2014, 01:19:52 pm »
Hi,

the RandomColorDocTabs setting in hippoedit.config seems to have no effect. Even when I set it to true, the document tabs won't be colored, regardless of whether I use the XP theme or the 2003 theme. Am I missing something?

Best regards,
Andreas

Bug reports / Auto Reload does not work in certain environment
« on: September 05, 2014, 08:24:30 am »
Auto Reload does not work in a certain environment. If you have a file opened in HippoEdit and the file is changed outside of HippoEdit, HippoEdit will not automatically detect the change and will not reload the file.

I've tried hard to create step-by-step instructions how you could reproduce the problem under Windows, but unfortunately in vain. Under Windows, Auto Reload works fine and the problem does not occur. However, the problem is 100% reproducible in my working environment, which involves Linux. Here are the details:

The file is located on a Linux Server which is mounted via NFS to a Windows PC. HippoEdit runs on that Windows PC and has opened the file. On the Linux Server, the file is updated by means of the command rsync.

I've tested with EmEditor and SynWrite whether they have the same problem as HippoEdit. They have not. EmEditor and SynWrite reliably detect the change of the file and automatically reload it.

FAQ / Wrong behavior of 'cursor up' key
« on: September 01, 2014, 10:51:13 am »
The 'cursor up' key behaves incorrectly. Steps to reproduce:

1. Make sure that the Insert mode is active.

2. Create a text file with the following content:

abc
def

3. Place the cursor on the "d".

4. Press "x". As a result, you'll get:

abc
xdef

5. Press the 'cursor up' key.

Expected behavior: The cursor will be on "b".
Actual behavior: The cursor will be on "a".

Bug reports / Drop-down lists in 'Find in Files' forgetting old values
« on: September 01, 2014, 09:26:51 am »
The drop-down menus 'Directory' and 'Include Mask' often forget their previous values. Only the very last value will be available then, but not older values.

This problem does not occur with the 'Find what' drop-down menu.
