Create New document (Menu, Start Page, Ctrl+N)
« on: January 20, 2009, 11:20:32 AM »
Not sure it is a bug. When I create a new doc from main menu /File/New, with some I have to choose the extension, with some others, not. I don't understand well the rule.
When I open start page, I am able to create new (right side of page), but not to choose extension. So new doc is always empty. :(
BTW I consider that start page is useful and beautiful. So I assigned to it a key shortcut.

It works as designed ;)

If syntax schema has only one extension assigned, there is no submenu in File->New but direct entry with Syntax name (but you can still see the extension on the left side of menu entry).
If syntax has more then one extension assigned, you would get a submenu to select an extension in File->New.
If you create file using File->New then File Template can be applied to new file. File template is searched by extension in %HIPPO_DIR%\data\templates directory.

If you press Ctrl+N shortcut in current document, Untiltled document with syntax and code page of current document would be created. You would be asked about extension on save. File templates are not used.

If you create new file with a Start Page new Untitled file would be created with selected syntax and default (for this syntax code page). Proposal for new files in Start Page based on last used syntax. Maybe it would be better to store not only last used syntaxes, but also last used extension, and then suggest to create a new file with last used extensions (in this case File Templates can be also applied).

Thanks, that is clear, now.
Just an idea yet : when we create a new file based on syntax with only one extension, this one is named UntitledX (without extension). If more than one extension, new file is named Untitled.ext (with the choosen extension). And of course, also for the document window title. Why that difference ?
I think that in the first case, the new file ought be named with the unique extension.

I agree totally, if not too heavy.

hen we create a new file based on syntax with only one extension
where ? Or better to ask How? With File ->New menu I get file created with an extension, also if syntax has only one extension. Can you give example how you got it? Or you just mean that generally, if syntax has only one extension, Untitled shouldaways have it?

About Statrt Up Page and last used extension instead of syntaxes: I would place it on todo. Would be with 1.50.

Yes, I just mean only that, because I'm lost until I see an extension glued to the filename, also in the window title. Currently we see the extension only when saving, that is my little problem.
