Beyond Compare Integration

Perhaps you already own beyond compare, I do; presumably Tim does too. And why? Because it would extend functionality beyond what HE can do...

That said, I have not yet gotten BC configured in HE. Still slowly setting up my external tools...

I meant perhaps instead of forcing people paying $50 or more for a single copy of BC or a similar tool you could integrate one of the Open Source projects into HE?
E.g. the GNU Diff http://savannah.gnu.org/projects/diffutils ?

Hi Arthur,

OpenSource is not == free.
There is an license too, mostly with the consequence that if you implement open source code
into your project,... you have to give your tool away as open source too.

Yeah, agree, but in some scenarios, for example if one's employer takes the laptop/PC once a month to refresh to the base image (you will loose all you had installed e.g. HE, ExamDiff, Hex Viewer, FTP Client, etc.), the dependency of HE on external tools and the associated time to re-get and re-integrate them with HE makes it a less desirable product.

I do set up my (test) pc every day more then once
Since HE is portable and the tools i introduce are this too
it's only a matter how you set them up and where you store your tools.

- i have an second (and some more) partition on my pc's
- i store HE and all tools on such an other partition then C:\,.... so i can overwrite C;\ without loose my data, tools and documents
- i include this external tool by using relative paths, f.ex.

Tool-A\a.exe
HippoEDIT\Tools\Tool-B\b.exe

the path to a.exe would be ..\Tool-A\a.exe
the path to b.exe would be .\Tools\Tool-B\b.exe

Even paths like ..\..\..\Tool-C\c.exe is possible.


So i can simple copy all my tools to an other pc or partition or to an USB-Stick and don't have to take care about the drive letter.

And i mean Alex has implemented somewhat like  %HippoEDIT-Folder%   and  %Drive where HippoEDIT is started from%
so you could use %HippoEDIT-Folder%\Tools\Tool-B\b.exe
and %Drive where HippoEDIT is startet from%\Tool-A\a.exe

Novell's ZenWorks, Centennial Discovery and a ton of other desktop managements tools lock sometimes the USB port and the whole HDD can be taken for refresh every once in a while. I even heard of Admins sealing the USB port off with epoxy glue!

Then you may have somewhere an so called Home-Drive on an Novell-Share or somewhat?
Just keep HE and all related tools in one single folder with sub-folders.
And before you have to restore your HDD just zip the whole HippoEDIT-folder and store the archive away.

What do you do with your documents? Are they gone too if your HDD have to be restored?

How did you get HippoEDIT on your PC? You are allowed to download?
Then just store an archive with HE and all your tools on some webspace and download it when needed.
Updated it then with your recent saved config files.

All in all it's not much difference if you have HE with build-in functions or HE with external tools packed
(ok. with build-in tools it's more comfortable, but you have to use what developer had implemented then)

Nothing is going away, all is in the "cloud" (online storage) including the docs [and this is the feature and a good thing, after-all the OS is going away], but all tools need to be re-installed, this is the headache, that's why I wanted HE to be less dependant on externals and be as self contained as possible.

You are right Allen, I do already own a license to BC3 and I use it on a daily basis and find it to be invaluable.

Thanks for the link to the other post Stefan.  I think the OpenFilesInteractive switch will work just fine for now.
