Is there way how to set the number of recent files HE offers to open?
(BTW, recently, all the (ten) items in the list under File/Open disappeared for me, I don't know why. Any ideas?)

It is configurable in hippoedit.config (should be in your user data directory):

<RecentFileCount>10</RecentFileCount>

The list itself is workspace dependent, and stored inside a workspace.
Probably you have opened HE with different workspace, so you do not see the favorites.
You can unintentionally switch to "viewer" workspace, if you use double click in windows explorer or context menu or command line.
